I feel deeply fortunate to be something of a latecomer to classical music, having fallen in love with it only as an adult. Why "fortunate"? Because I still have so many masterpieces to discover, and I get to savor every note of my first listen! One of my favorite recent discoveries was Clara Schumann's Piano Concerto, which bowled me over with its assertive and modern sound, despite being the work of a prodigious 16-year-old artist in 1835. That virtuosic piano line, those soaring orchestral themes… I particularly love the third movement and the (too) short dialogue between the bassoon and the piano (30:33-31:08), cheerful and self-assured, which seems to pass along a sense of accomplishment to the listener from the composer herself.
