Program notes
Originally created in 1993 for the Tokyo Ballet, Maurice Béjart’s M is an elegant and dynamic production that combines classic Western repertoire like Debussy, Satie, and Wagner with the profound richness of Japanese culture and original music by Toshiro Mayuzumi. M tells the story of Yukio Mishima, one of the most celebrated Japanese writers of the 20th century, with Béjart’s dances reflecting his work and his powerful influence. Often inspired by traditional Japanese theater such as kabuki or nô, Béjart’s choreography gracefully weaves together traditional dance with contemporary and evokes universal themes such as beauty, eroticism, and death. Immerse yourself in this hypnotising work that explores the nuances of dance; art and our human experiences!
