Program notes

In collaboration with the Bayerischen Staatsballett, Alexei Ratmansky, one of the most renowned choreographers and dancers of our time, renders a triple homage to Tchaikovsky. Overtures breathes new life to three of the great Russian composer’s works inspired by William Shakespeare: Hamlet, The Tempest, and Romeo and Juliette. French scenographer Jean-Marc’s Puissant’s geometric set design brings a captivating atmosphere to this production.

Presented in 2022, this tragic triptyque immerses us in the drama of the plays while also being an abstract and passionate representation of the Russian Ratmansky’s strong emotions over the invasion of Ukraine. By combining 19th-century Russian music with Renaissance English theatre in order to navigate his impressions of the contemporary world, Ramtansky demonstrates the universal power and eternal relevance of art.
