Program notes
Join us at the seventh edition of the Festival Singer-Polignac for a special concert that marks the culmination of the Elmire Quartet’s residency at the stunning Fondation Singer-Polignac. The accomplished ensemble performs Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 9, the last of his “Razumovsky” cycle — a set of string quartets commissioned by the Russian ambassador in Vienna, Count Andreas Razumovsky — and a product of his heroic “middle” period. A striking performance of Mendelssohn’s String Octet follows suit, as the musicians join forces with their mentors in the renowned Ébène Quartet. Written when Mendelssohn was just sixteen years old, the Octet treats its eight players as a miniature orchestra, combining contrapuntal brilliance and classical poise with the expressive spirit of the Romantic era.
