Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica perform "America": Barber, Bernstein, Glass

In celebration of his 80th birthday, the great Latvian violin virtuoso Gidon Kremer presents “America,” a program of poignant, compelling music by North American composers Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, and Leonard Bernstein at Paris’s Fondation Louis Vuitton. First, Kremer lends his exploratory, interpretative style to Philip Glass’s Violin Concerto No. 2, entitled “The American Four Seasons.” Without a clear guide as to which season is represented by each of its four movements, Glass invites listeners to interpret for themselves how the modern, dramatic, evocative music relates to Vivaldi’s iconic masterwork. After the Kremerata Baltica delivers an exquisite rendition of Barber’s heart-rending Adagio for Strings, award-winning Ukrainian violinist Bohdan Luts then takes the stage to perform Bernstein’s Serenade, a dazzlingly colorful musical fresco depicting the characters of Plato’s Symposium.
