Program notes

Embrace the New Year with a vibrant celebration of music and dance in Liège, Belgium! The Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, under the baton of their music director Lionel Bringuier, begin the program with Ravel’s masterpiece Le Tombeau de Couperin, a neo-classical piece rooted in the elegance of the French Baroque dance suite. Stravinsky’s formidable Firebird lights up the Philharmonic Hall of Liège with its dazzling orchestration and propulsive energy, while Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos — starring piano power couple Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy — blends the bright sounds of Balinese gamelan with Mozartian lyricism. The concert comes full circle with a return to Ravel and his mesmerizing Boléro, now a perennial favorite originally commissioned as ballet music by Ida Rubinstein.
