Program notes
In the beautiful snow-capped mountains of Switzerland, world-renowned classical artists and distinguished orchestras gather for the 26th edition of the Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad! In this evening’s program, internationally acclaimed operatic tenor Pene Pati interprets an exquisite selection of French songs by Duparc and Bizet, with French orchestra Les Siècles, conducted by Harry Ogg. Pati lends his “round and sunshine filled voice” (Le Monde) to five of Henri Duparc’s 17 sumptuous Mélodies, settings of French poetry masterpieces by the likes of Baudelaire and Gautier. The Samoan-born New Zealand singer then takes on two operatic favorites by Bizet, the poignant “La fleur que tu m’avais jetée” from Carmen, and “Je crois entendre encore” from The Pearl Fishers. Les Siècles also perform Ravel's beguiling Ma Mère l'Oye (Mother Goose), an orchestral suite inspired by beloved fairy tales.
