Program notes

Canadian virtuoso pianist Marc-André Hamelin takes the stage of the Tsinandali Festival 2026 to perform a rich and varied solo program. Composed in 1956, Mieczysław Weinberg’s Piano Sonata No. 5 blends stark dissonance with legato melodies in a classical structure. By way of contrast, Debussy’s Images, Book II abandons classical form altogether to create a coloristic sonic palette inspired by the natural world. Hamelin amplifies the profound emotional depth of Chopin’s second Piano Sonata in B-flat Minor, particularly the quiet darkness of the third-movement funeral march and the whirlwind presto of the finale.
