Program notes
Join the greatest contemporary Baroque musicians in the creation of a legendary recording. Conductor Jean-Christophe Spinosi leads the Matheus ensemble with vivacity and precision in recording two of Vivaldi’s major operas, accompanied by a world-class cast including Sandrine Piau, Veronica Cangemi, Marie-Nicole Lemieux, Jennifer Larmore, and Philippe Jaroussky. The artists begin by performing the fantasies of Roland in Orlando Furioso, a great dramatic fresco centred on the torments of its protagonist, who is gradually driven mad by his unrequited love for Angelica and the spells of the magician Alcina. They then bring to life the theatrical elegance and pastoral charm of the romantic entanglements between two brothers and two sisters in La Fida Ninfa, composed for the grand opening of Verona’s majestic Teatro Filarmonico in 1732.
