Staff Pick of the Week

This summer in Verbier, I was lucky enough to sit in at the rehearsal of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue by Lucas Debargue, Tarmo Peltokoski, and the VFCO — and it's a memory I won't soon forget.

I first heard this famous piece as a teenager and immediately fell for its many charms, spellbound by the dialogue between piano and orchestra. It wasn't long before I found myself in my bedroom with my Walkman, gesticulating wildly as I "conducted" a recording I'd found, far from prying eyes and fully caught up in the magic of Gershwin.

I did not go on to become a world-renowned conductor (yet), but this piece was one of the first that taught me the power of music to bring comfort, even after a long and trying day.
