Program notes

Under the expert direction of their new music director Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, the Orchestre national de Lyon accompanies the illustrious Sir András Schiff at the piano. In the virtuoso's hands, rediscover Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a work with a distinctive structure in which piano and orchestra merge into one, rather than respond to one another. Following Schiff's feats of pianistic strength, the preeminent conductor and his celebrated ensemble continue the challenge they took up last September—the full set of Schumann symphonies—with the brooding and passionate Symphony No. 4!
