Program notes

Legendary maestro Zubin Mehta returns to lead the superb Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino — this time in Slovenia's gorgeous capital at the 2024 Ljubljana Festival — in three of the greatest works from Beethoven's middle period! They perform the Egmont Overture, a prototypical example of the "heroic" style that bears a certain similarity to the Fifth Symphony; Beethoven's lone, extraordinary Violin Concerto in D, featuring radiant soloist Lana Trotovšek, celebrated for her "clean, refined tone with musical sense of phrasing and impeccable intonation" (Washington Post); and the Seventh Symphony, known as much for the ebullience of its lively outer movements in A major as for the extraordinary A-minor detour of its second-movement Allegretto, as perfect an encapsulation of the indomitable human spirit as Beethoven ever wrote.
