Program notes

In a series of four master classes, the internationally-acclaimed German violinist Christian Tetzlaff works with alumni of the New World Symphony (NWS) on some of the most beautiful works for violin of the last three centuries.

Extracts from the time he spent with these accomplished young violinists display Tetzlaff’s renowned musical integrity, intelligence and technical assurance.

Concentrating on the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, NWS alumna Sarah Kim and Christian Tetzlaff explore the impact of vibrato and body positioning on character and color. The concerto, considered one of the most technically difficult works for violin, was written in 1878, with the first performance by Adolph Brodsky in 1881.
