E.M. Forster declared “Beethoven’s 5th Symphony is the most sublime noise that has ever penetrated into the ear of man.” A very poignant judgment, but there is some truth in it since E.T.A. Hoffman, more poetically, said “Beethoven’s instrumental music opens to us the realm of the monstrous and immeasurable. Glowing rays shoot through the deep night of this realm, and we sense giant shadows surging to and fro, closing in on us until they destroy us.” Also known by its fitting subtitle, the “Destiny” Symphony, and for its titanic sonic presence, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67 was composed between 1804 and 1808. Though premiered in Vienna without any major success, the 5th is, nowadays, considered a cornerstone in symphonic music and one of the most frequently programmed by the best halls in the world.

Also known as the “Destiny” Symphony, Beethoven's 5th Symphony holds dominion in the canon of classical music, thanks to its grandiose and imperial style. From the first movement—one of the most intense and distinctive Allegro con brio ever written—to its final notes, the Symphony No. 5 shows the composer’s magnificent spirit of musical ardor and perseverance, as writing music was no effortless feat for Beethoven, but a heavy labor of love. Talking about 5th’s finale, Beethoven wrote, “In the Symphony’s last movement there are three trombones and a piccolo [...] this instrument's combination produces more noise and, which is more important, a more pleasing noise.” It is no wonder why the rock band Deep Purple used the first four notes of the 5th to write the riff of their hit song Smoke on the Water! E.T.A. Hoffmann poetically said: “Only with this pain of love, hope, joy—which consumes but does not destroy [...] we live on, enchanted seers of the ghostly world.” Come and bear witness to the best interpretations of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 on medici.tv!
