Program notes
At the Banlieues Bleues festival, Antonin-Tri Hoang and the Novembre quartet extend an invitation to explore the legacy of Ornette Coleman, the “godfather” of free jazz.
Drawing on his own career—from Daniel Yvinec’s Orchestre National de Jazz to his Grand Bazar duo with Ève Risser—Antonin-Tri Hoang sketches out a “survival” rather than a revival: a way of maintaining the momentum of freedom and invention at the heart of Coleman’s style through various evocative variations. With the Novembre quartet, experts in the art of blending eras and references, this performance becomes a luminous ode to improvisation, a concert where Ornette’s legacy is revived in the present.
