Program notes
One of the most distinctive saxophonists of his generation, Jowee Omicil continues his personal exploration of open jazz fusion. A multi-instrumentalist with infectious energy, brought to the attention of the general public by the series The Eddy, he has developed a style that draws as much on his Afro-Haitian roots as it does on contemporary forms of improvisation.
For this concert at the Jazz à Porquerolles Festival, Jowee Omicil presents a program composed of a dozen of his own pieces, enriched by a tribute to Mozart, already explored during his remarkable performance at the Le Mans Europa Jazz Festival. Through these unexpected nods to classical repertoire, he continues his work of breaking down barriers, creating a dialgoue between Caribbean traditions, gospel, voodoo influences, and the uninhibited spirit of free jazz.
