Farnace, King of Pontus and a sworn enemy of Rome, has been defeated. To avoid falling into the hands of the Romans, he commands his wife and son to commit suicide, setting in motion a story defined by fractured loyalties, family turmoil, and political intrigue. Antonio Maria Lucchini created a libretto based around this ancient historical figure, initially set to music by Leonardo Vinci and then Antonio Vivaldi in 1727. Marking Vivaldi’s most successful opera seria, the Baroque masterpiece was revised several times by the composer for different performances. Nearly 300 years later, the Teatro Malibran reopened after the pandemic with a unique staging of Vivaldi’s work.
