Program notes
Don’t this miss this playful and enchanting production of Richard Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg that The New York Times calls “fresh, charming…magical and irresistible.” Over four hours long, Die Meistersinger is the longest commonly performed opera and one of the composer’s only two comedies. At the 2013 Salzburg Festival, the stage director known for his immense originality Stefan Herheim transforms the stage into a wonderland. Michael Volle brings to life the role of cobbler Hans Sachs with masterful nuance.
In 16th-century Nuremberg, the suitors fighting for the beautiful Eva must participate in a singing contest. The humble knight Walther is hopelessly in love but knows nothing about singing, that is until the master singer Hans Sachs takes pity on him and decides to help. Wagner wrote Die Meistersinger as an exploration of the importance of art in society and the reconciliation between the old and the new. This production remains faithful to the composer’s intentions while also presenting a new vision of this sublime opera.
