Program notes

One of Rossini's most rarely heard and most drama-filled operas, the tragic Ermione, based on Racine's play Andromaque, comes blazing to life in this production from the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Italy. Set amid continued hostilities after the Trojan War, the opera centers on Hermione, daughter of Menelaus and Helen, consumed by a jealous passion when she discovers that her betrothed, Pyrrhus, is in love with the beautiful Andromache. Torn between love, vengeance, and honor, Hermione struggles to extricate herself from a whirlwind of emotional extremes, tracing a poignant portrait of impossible love and human ardor.

This mise en scène by Johannes Erath, with Michele Mariotti conducting the RAI's splendid orchestra, unfurls all the expressive force of Rossini's work in an ambitious staging that keeps human drama firmly at the center and raises the characters' conflicts to a boiling point. Anastasia Bartoli and Juan Diego Flórez bring dramatic flair and vocal virtuosity to the roles of Hermione and Orestes, who tries to win Hermione's affections away from Pyrrhus. Honored with the prestigious Franco Abbiati Prize for the Best Production of 2024, this Ermione offers a powerful and modern reading of a Rossini classic that sees love and revenge intertwine to catastrophic ends.
