Program notes

For the first time, the Glyndebourne Festival presents Semele, Handel’s most scandalous oratorio. Starring Joélle Harvey in the titular role, this production also marks Václav Luks’s debut at the Festival, and who better to conduct such an intricate jewel of baroque opera !

Semele is betrothed to Athamas, prince of Boeotia, but she falls for another. Her paramour? None other than Jove (Jupiter), the king of the gods. When he whisks Semele away, the lovers provoke the wrath of the jealous Juno, Jove’s wife, who vows to destroy her rival. Ripe with desire, vengeance, melodic virtuosity, and choral splendor, this production of Semele promises to delight your ears and keep you on the edge of your seat.
