Program notes

Egyptian soprano Fatma Said invites you on a musical journey alongside guest conductor Alondra de la Parra and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. This sublime concert from her On the Way to Egypt tour features musical works with diverse cultural influences by Ravel, Bizet, de Falla, and Villoldo, the father of the Argentine tango, as well as the captivating harmonies of Egyptian songs by Mohie El Din, Farid El-Atrache, Hani Shenouda, and Abdel Wahab!

Born in Cairo in 1991, Fatma Said studied music in Berlin before becoming the first Egyptian singer to perform at Milan’s La Scala. Globally acclaimed for her vocal virtuosity, Said now interprets some of the most iconic female opera roles across Europe's most prestigious stages. Honoring her Egyptian heritage, On the Way to Egypt celebrates the influence of Western classical music on Egyptian traditional music, and vice versa. Tonight’s concert features stunning, evocative solos by ney flute player Valentina Belanova and bandoneonist Omar Massa, and rounds out with the world premiere of Zahr Al Khayal by English composer James Whitbourn.
