Belle Shiu
About
Hong Kong-raised Pipa player Belle Shiu graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with Master of Music, majoring in Pipa under tutelage of Zhang Ying, where she was awarded First Initiative Foundation Music Scholarship, HSBC Mainland Exchange Scholarship, Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation Scholarship and Spring-Time Stage Productions Scholarship. She started learning Pipa at the age of 8 under Li Ping. She has also trained by Pipa virtuoso, Professor Yang Jing and Professor Ren Hong, trained in Nanyin Pipa under Ong Chay-tin and Zheng under Luo Jing. In 2013 Hong Kong International Youth Pipa Competition and 2013 Hong Kong International Youth Music Competition, she was awarded Bronze Award in International Group and the Merit Award in Youth Professional group.
As an active solo and chamber musician, Shiu has collaborated with cellist Trey Lee, violist Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Mendelssohn and Gian Paolo Peloso, as well as the Moscow Soloists and Birmingham Symphonic Winds (U.K.). In 2014 and 2015, she was invited to be one of the artists in Musicus Fest by Musicus Society. She has performed in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Finland, Estonia. Besides, she toured the UK and Ireland representing her alma mater the HKAPA and was invited to perform at the prestigious Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland in 2015.
Shiu is currently a freelance musician and tutor in Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, a core member of Yue Pipa Ensemble. She was the Pipa Principal of Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra.

In addition to her professional training, she has studied Pipa with virtuoso, Professor Yang Jing, Professor Ren Hong; Nanyin Pipa with Ong Chay-tin; and Zheng with Luo Jing. Shiu is active as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra player. She has collaborated with renowned artists including cellist Trey Lee, violist Yuri Bashmet, Vladimir Mendelssohn, Gian Paolo Peloso and performed with the Moscow Soloists and the Birmingham Symphonic Winds (U.K.). In 2014 and 2015, she was invited to be one of the artists in Musicus Fest in Hong Kong. She has made appearance throughout China, Taiwan, Singapore, Finland, Estonia and Itlay. In 2015, she also toured the UK and Ireland representing her alma mater the HKAPA and was invited to perform at the prestigious Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland. In 2016, she was invited to perform at Prosecco Festival in Italy.
