Philippe Mouratoglou is a French guitarist who has had Pablo Marquez, Wim Hoogewerf and Roland Dyens as teachers. His approach of the guitar is highly personal, and characterized by the practise of various instruments (classic guitars, 6-string and 12-string folk guitars, electric guitar) and music genres.
Mouratoglou's career is dedicated to the classical music repertoire (ranging from the 15th-century Renaissance to contemporary music, through baroque or latin American and Spanish musics) but not only: he is also a renowned improviser and arranger, having arranged himself melodies by such musicians as Egberto Gismonti, Ornette Coleman and Robert Johnson.
He collaborates with very different musicians and ensembles: contemporary music with the ensembles Linea, Alma Viva and the festival Musica in Strasburg, symphonic repertoire with the Orchestre Philarmonique de Strasbourg and the Opéra du Rhin, traditional musics with Bernard Revel and the ensemble Convivencia... In 2009, at the 43rd festival de La Chaise-Dieu, he premieres a project around Dowland and Britten with his trio So full of shapes (Jean-Marc Foltz, clarinets/Juliette de Banes Gardonne, mezzo-soprano). He has also participated in several projects with the guitarist and arranger Bernard Struber, the soprano Ariane Wohlhuter, the flamenco guitarist Pedro Soler, and the countertenor Leandro Marziotte.
Philippe Mouratoglou was once the assistant of Pablo Marquez at the Salzburg Conservatory (Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg), from 2002 to 2007. He also teaches guitar and electric bass to the students of the Théâtre National de Strasbourg.
In 2005, he releases O Gloriosa Domina, a disc displaying five centuries of Spanish music. In October 2012, he releases Steady rollin' man, a record on which he performs arrangement of musics by Robert Johnson with Bruno Chevillon (doube-bass) and Jean-Marc Foltz (clarinets) ª a disc released on the Vision fugitive labe, which he founded in 2012 with Jean-Marc Foltz and Philippe Ghielmetti.
Philippe Mouratoglou is a regular guest of the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu, Les Temps Musicaux de Ramatuelle, Nits de canço i musica d’Eus, Guitare en Montagne Noire, festival du Vilar, festival Jazzèbre de Perpignan...
