Program notes
Acclaimed choreographer Edward Clug's five-star production of Peer Gynt, "marked by compassion and color" (Bachtrack), comes for the very first time to Milan's legendary Teatro alla Scala, and you can watch it live exclusively on medici.tv! Written for the classic Ibsen play of the same name, Edvard Grieg's spellbinding score boasts some of the most recognizable melodies in all of classical music, from the bucolic serenity of "Morning Mood" to the diabolical frenzy of "In the Hall of the Mountain King," all brought to life with grace and power by a stellar cast including Navrin Turnbull as Peer Gynt, Alice Mariani as his love Solveig, and Antonella Albano as his mother Åse.
Voyaging from the mountains of Norway to the deserts of North Africa and back, the flighty title character encounters a dazzling variety of characters across vibrant landscapes both real and fantastic, through exile and grief, love and loss, terror and joy. Clug's vision of this timeless tale is enhanced by a deep understanding of Ibsen's artistic philosophy and by a further sampling of Grieg's greatest scores, performed by the renowned house orchestra under Victorien Vanoosten.
