Program notes

The Australian Ballet performs Marius Petipa’s technically challenging, visually mesmerizing pantomime ballet Paquita to perfection, with the exceptional Lana Jones and Kevin Jackson in the spotlight!

The ballet narrates the story of an impossible love between Paquita, a young Romani girl, and a French officer, Lucien d’Hervilly. Though set apart by their social background, their love is eventually rendered legitimate by a twist of fate, as the young girl discovers that she had been kidnapped by gypsies, but she is in fact of noble origin. The ballet unites dozens of performers on stage at once, with a sparse set that allows the focus to fall on the choreography and intricate and fast-paced footwork of the dancers. Ludwig Léon Minkus’s lively music brings the energy up even higher, tutus twirling to the rhythm of the pirouettes as the Australian Ballet demonstrate their superb talent once more!
