Program notes
In Chinese culture, the New Year is one of the most important holidays, celebrated on the new moon between January and February and marking the transition from winter to spring with parades, fireworks, food, festivities, and—of course—music! Ring in 2024, the Year of the Dragon, with a grand concert in the famed Hamburg Elbphilharmonie as the China National Traditional Orchestra, conducted by Li Xincao, performs a delightfully spirited program featuring renowned performers on traditional Chinese instruments: Ding Xiaokui on the dizi (a transverse flute), Duan Chao on the erhu (the two-stringed fiddle with a highly distinctive sound), Yang Zhijian on the guqin (a plucked seven-string instrument, sometimes referred to as the "father of Chinese music"), and on the pipa, similar to a lute, the CNTO's own artistic director Zhao Cong!
