Program notes

Aziz Shokhakimov leads the world-class Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the chorus of the Opéra National du Rhin and Philharmonic Choir of Brno, and an all-star lineup of vocalists—Serena Farnocchia, Jamie Barton, Benjamin Bernheim, and Ain Anger—in a thrilling rendition of Verdi's monumental Requiem!

Premiered in 1874 to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi's Requiem is today (along with that of Mozart) the most performed and recorded liturgical setting. Going against the dogma of the Catholic church, which would have preferred an austere musical style without female vocalists, Verdi composed a masterpiece of the most expressive, dramatic music—unmistakably the work of an operatic specialist—with half of the four solo roles going to women. The orchestral writing is as demanding and poignant as the evidently operatic choral parts, calling for the full might of brasses and winds in often surprising ways. An impassioned mix of innovation and tradition that never fails to captivate audiences, performed by an unsurpassable cast—not to be missed!
