Program notes

Meet an emeritus maestro during an historic concert, recorded in March 2011 at the Berlin Philharmonie: The charismatic Yutaka Sado becomes the first Japanese artist to conduct the legendary Berlin Philharmonic since his renowned master Seiji Ozawa, in this poignant concert dedicated to the victims of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that took place in Japan just a few days prior.

The concert begins with Japanese composer Tōru Takemitsu's captivating From me flows what you call Time. Five percussionists of the highest caliber take on the challenging solo parts that see astounding sonic textures and rhythmic pattern overlap and mingle with the strings' rich timbre and the voluptuous sound of the woodwinds. The second part of the evening sees maestro Sado (who was also a student of Leonard Bernstein) masterfully conduct Shostakovich's iconic Symphony No. 5!
