Program notes

Feel the spirit with the Grammy-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and its incredible full chorus, joined by the world-renowned Morehouse College Glee Club! ASO Director of Choruses Norman Mackenzie leads the holiday smorgasboard, which features everything from legendary Shaw-Parker arrangements of well-known carols like "The First Noel" and "Away in a Manger" to gorgeous selections from large-scale choral masterpieces like the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah, Rachmaninov's "Bogoroditse devo" from the All-Night Vigil, and "Dona nobis pacem" from Bach's Mass in B Minor; highlights from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker and Bizet's L'Arlésienne; and the Yoruba tune "Betelehemu" by Nigerian legend Babatunde Olatunji in an arrangement the great Wendell Whalum, whose 35-year tenure as the Morehouse College Glee Club director saw them perform at the funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr., the inauguration of Jimmy Carter, and across five African countries on a memorable international tour.
