Program notes
After an enriching masterclass led by Gautier Capuçon, the 2018-2019 Classe d'Excellence de Violoncelle presents its closing concert in the heart of the Fondation Louis Vuitton. These six young and talented cellists have benefited from artistic and professional advice from a master of the cello and bring the adventure to a close with the pleasure of performing on one of the world’s most prestigious stages.
The Classe d’Excellence de Violoncelle offers candidates selected by audition in France and abroad the possibility to deepen their knowledge of music and learn more about the career of a professional musician. Gautier Capuçon and the pianist Samuel Parent accompany these young artists in their personal and artistic projects. A perfect mix of masterclass and complimentary professional training enables each of the students of the class to grow over the course of the season.
Gautier Capuçon is one of the greatest French cellists on the international scene today. He regularly collaborates with Lionel Bringuier, Myung-Whun Chung, Gustavo Dudamel, Semyon Bychkov, Leonard Slatkin, Valery Gergiev, and others as well as performing at celebrated music festivals accompanied by major orchestras. He has been awarded numerous prizes throughout his career, among them the First Grand Prize of the International André Navarra Competition in Toulouse, a prize at the 2001 Victoires de la Musique, several Echo Prizes (particularly in 2012 for a recording with Gergiev).
