Program notes

At the Alhambra's spectacular Palace of Charles V, acclaimed maestro Pablo Heras-Casado leads the impeccable Mahler Chamber Orchestra in the closing concert of the 2019 Festival de Granada—joined by violin virtuoso Isabelle Faust! Their program pays tribute to folkloric traditions of the Iberian peninsula, retracing the same complex web of origins that we see in the world-famous Alhambra, the 13th-century palace that bears traces of wide-ranging influences from Latin to Moorish. The Alhambra's statues, geometric motifs, and legendary sunsets are also set to music here by Peter Eötvös, whose violin concerto Alhambra receives its world premiere in the capable hands of Faust. Stravinsky's Pulcinella and Falla's El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat), with the help of soprano Carmen Romeu, round out this exquisite musical journey.
