Program notes

In the sumptuous Siemens-Villa in Berlin, Daniel Barenboim conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 26.

The brilliant pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim made a name for himself playing Mozart and Beethoven. In the 1980s and at the height of his artistic powers, Barenboim recorded Mozart’s last eight piano concertos with the magnificent Berliner Philharmoniker. These performances were staged in the neoclassical setting of Berlin’s Siemens-Villa, named for the celebrated music-lover and arts patron Ferdinand Werner Siemens. These archival films represent an exceptional memory of what was, for a time, the standard against which all performances of Mozart’s Piano Concertos were measured; the ultimate interpretation of the Mozartian masterpieces that laid the foundations for the modern concerto.
