Program notes
The Verbier Festival always attracts the most extraordinary chamber lineups in the world, and this year is no exception: violonist Marc Bouchkov, cellist Klaus Mäkelä, clarinetist Martin Fröst, and pianist Lucas Debargue join forces to offer us a splendid chamber music concert in the beautiful Verbier Church!
The concert begins with Mozart’s Piano Trio in B-Flat Major, an exceptional work suffused with lightness and serenity, especially in its sublimely poetic Larghetto. The violin and clarinet take the spotlight in Bartok’s Contrasts, commissioned in 1938 by violinist Joseph Szigeti and clarinetist Benny Goodman. This complex work blends traditional Hungarian music with Romanian melodies, alongside a demanding rhythmic pattern requiring perfect musical cohesion! The concert finishes with Brahms’s Clarinet Trio in A Minor—written after the composer’s meeting with clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld inspired him to reconsider his planned retirement—which immerses us in a wistful, autumnal melancholy…
