Program notes
Distinguished maestro Fabio Luisi leads the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in a stirring program combining avant-garde innovation with turbulent romanticism, featuring one of the most famous pieces of music ever created… The concert unveils the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Raven Chacon’s first major work for orchestra, Inscription. Cutting the boundaries of sonic and visual art, Chacon is renowned for creating works that expose hidden narratives of colonial violence. However, Inscription takes a different path, with the composer describing it as an opportunity to "make music for music’s sake." The work reflects the experimental techniques that Chacon explored in smaller chamber ensemble settings, including microtonality, the use of intervals smaller than a semitone. The auditorium then resonates with one of the most iconic musical motifs ever written — the four-note opening of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. Revolutionary in its radical simplicity and emotional depth, the piece stands as a testament to Beethoven’s brilliance in instrumental writing and orchestration.
