Program notes

Conducted by maestro Franz Welser-Möst, the musicians of the renowned Vienna Philharmonic perform some of the finest works of the early 20th century with their renowned intensity and elegance, enhanced by the famous acoustics of Vienna's Musikverein — considered one of the three most beautiful halls in the world, along with Boston's Symphony Hall and Amsterdam's Concertgebouw!

Immerse yourself in this hour-long concert, featuring the satirical Konzertmusik für Blasorchester by one of the undisputed masters of counterpoint, Hindemith; the Symphonic Fantasy after Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow) by the great Richard Strauss; followed by the marvelous and surprising Variations for Orchestra by Schoenberg, father of twelve-tone music; before concluding in style with the superb orchestral choreographic poem La Valse, by French Impressionist composer Maurice Ravel. An exquisite selection of works in a variety of approaches and styles, composed by the greatest masters of the early 20th century, to be (re)discovered on medici.tv!
