Program notes

Piano prodigy Mao Fujita makes a hugely anticipated appearance at the 2022 Verbier Festival, joining the gregarious Gábor Takács-Nagy, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, an acclaimed lineup of vocalists, and the Münchener Bach-Chor for an all-Beethoven evening at the Salle des Combins!

Fujita opens the festivities as the soloist in Beethoven's sparkling Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-Flat Major, bold and innovative, a work of great stature perfectly suited to the pianist's storied talents, expressive capacity, and faultless technique. We then remain in the company of Beethoven with the Münchener Bach-Chor and world-class soloists like Maria Dan and Ema Nikolovska for the immortal Symphony No. 9 in D Minor. Composed in 1824, this monumental work occupies a stratospheric place in the classical pantheon, celebrated for its all-encompassing grandeur and the exaltation of its final theme based on Schiller's "Ode to Joy," an apotheosis of emotion and a celebration of love and human endeavor.
