Program notes

"An apology is due to the public for inflicting upon it another review," wrote Compton Mackenzie in April 1923, "but I should not be doing so unless I were persuaded that many of the numerous possessors of gramophones will welcome an organ of candid opinion." One hundred years after this prologue to the very first issue of The Gramophone, the magazine is recognized the world over as one of the most influential classical music publications. Gramophone’s Editor in Chief James Jolly tells the story of the magazine's first century in the company of a stellar line-up of artists, many of whom are recipients of Gramophone Awards.
