Program notes

Under musical director Gustavo Dudamel, the Paris Opera Orchestra open their 2022-23 season in grand style at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu with one of the most revered and challenging works in classical music history: Mahler's Symphony No. 9!

First performed a few years after the composer's death, Mahler's Ninth is a musical testament to the hardships he had endured in the preceding years, including the death of his daughter Maria Anna. The work's movements follow without clear segues and in different keys, all tumult and drama finally dispersing in a quiet, heart-rending coda that fades slowly and irrevocably away—a disintegration that has come to symbolize, for many, Mahler's impending death. It is, in the words of Karajan, "music coming from another world, it is coming from eternity."
