Program notes

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Hans Graf, performs some of the repertoire's most romantic melodies in a sumptuous rendition of Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet. Considered by the composer as one of his most beautiful works, this "Fantasy Overture" is a sublime musical expression of the passion and torment of literature's most famous star-crossed lovers. Following this grand introduction with more moments of deep lyricism, violinist Benjamin Schmid joins the SSO to perform the solo part in Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G Minor, full of enchanting melodic lines by turns light and lyrical, dark and tumultuous. The musicians conclude their program in monumental style with Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, an exploration of ineluctable fate that finishes in an explosion of color and emotion.
