Program notes
In 1949, a seven-year-old pianist made her stage debut in Argentina, playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.1. The great Martha Argerich (you guessed it!) would continue to tackle the work for decades to come, untangling its secrets along the way. Watch her perform it here half a century later alongside the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Herbert Blomstedt. The illustrious orchestra and conductor continue to explore Beethoven's oeuvre in the second half of the program with the iconic Symphony No. 3, also known as the "Eroica."
