Program notes

Experience a captivating performance of the Berliner Philharmoniker in the verdant musical oasis of the Waldbühne presenting “An Italian Night” led by the Italian maestro par excellence, the late great Claudio Abbado. Baritone Bryn Terfel, tenor Sergei Larin, and soprano Angela Gheorghiu joined them for selections from operas by Bellini, Rossini, and Verdi.

One summer evening in 1996, Berliners were treated to gentle musical breezes from the Italian peninsula... The concert’s program featured five effervescent opera overtures by Verdi (Nabucco, La forza del destino, and Les Vêpres siciliennes)  and Rossini (William Tell and Barber of Seville). Highlights with the soloists included "Et lui..." from Don Carlos, the  “Fire Chorus”, “Jago's Credo”, and "Gia nella notte...." from Otello, the “Triumphal March” from Aida, and "Eccomi..." from Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi.
