Program notes
No artists have done more to bring Hector Berlioz's gorgeous vocal works to wider audiences in recent years than mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, tenor Michael Spyres, conductor John Nelson, and the extraordinary Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, who have already collaborated on rapturously received renditions of his operas Les Troyens and La Damnation de Faust, to name just a few. This Berlioz dream team is joined by maestro Ludovic Morlot for an unforgettable evening of greatest hits, featuring ravishingly beautiful selections from Les Troyens and Roméo et Juliette, as well as the bold cantata Cléopâtre for voice and orchestra, composed for the Prix de Rome in 1829. Also on the program: the passionate Wesendonck Lieder by Wagner, an admirer of Berlioz who dedicated a copy of the contemporaneously written Tristan und Isolde to the French composer.
