Program notes

Maestro Josep Pons, the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, mezzo-soprano Huiling Zhu, and soprano Erin Wall join forces at Geneva's Palais des Nations for a stunning concert for human rights featuring works by Handel, Beethoven, and Strauss.

This fourth edition of the Human Rights Concert opens with mezzo-soprano Huiling Zhu's gripping rendition of the peace-praising aria "Ombra mai fu" from Handel's opera Serse. Pons then leads the orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, the most rhythmic of all his symphonies—a masterpiece which has known unfailing success since its creation. Soprano Erin Wall then joins them for Richard Strauss' Vier letzte Lieder, the composer's final completed work which explores death with calm and acceptance.
