Program notes

For 30 years, the Berliner Philharmoniker’s beloved summer concert has been held at the stunning Waldbühne in Berlin, one of the world’s most storied outdoor venues. For this 2022 edition, the orchestra invites conductor Kirill Petrenko and pianist Kirill Gerstein to join them on the stage!

The concert begins with Kikimora, a "fairytale for orchestra" by Anatoly Lyadov, a breathtaking work that calls to mind Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. The program continues with Rachmaninov’s formidable Piano Concerto No. 2, perhaps the composer’s most popular work, and one prized by audiences and piano virtuosos like Kirill Gerstein, who performs it with great emotion and spellbinding technical ease. To conclude, the Berliner Philharmoniker performs Mussorgksy’s Pictures at an Exhibition in Ravel’s sweeping and celebrated orchestration.
