Program notes
Reuniting enough star power to generate a supernova, world-leading virtuoso Yuja Wang astonishes once again in Rachmaninov's riveting Piano Concerto No. 2 with the LSO and their Conductor Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas — who also perform Beethoven's Fifth! In the Rachmaninov, by turns heartbreaking and electrifying, Yuja is "subtlety personified: effortlessly virtuosic without being showy; quiet and delicate but never precious, flying about on butterfly wings" (The Times). MTT and the London Symphony Orchestra, who open the program with Grieg's yearning "The Last Spring," finish off the festivities with a "taut and punchy" reading of perhaps the most famous symphony ever composed, utterly captivating from its instantly recognizable C-minor motif all the way through the chords of resounding C-major triumph that close it out.
