Program notes
Crossover star Ludovico Einaudi, the Italian pianist and composer whose work has featured broadly in popular media, brings his uniquely evocative music to the Baths of Caracalla in Rome. This knockout program chiefly features pieces from his hit 2013 album In a Time Lapse, as well as selections from Divenire, Nightbook, and Le Onde.
Einaudi and his seven-member band begin the evening in a mood of serenity, piano melding seamlessly with cellos and guitars, before the ambiance begins to heighten. We are treated to reinterpretations of some of Einaudi's most famous works, like "Fly," heard in the blockbuster French film The Intouchables. The final pieces on the program, with greater use of percussion and elements of electronic music, continue to evoke the mix of joy and melancholy that characterizes Einaudi's emotional power—heightened by the thoughtful lighting design, which creates an intimate atmosphere in the millennia-old ruins.
