Mao Fujita — Pianist

Program notes

The mega-talented Mao Fujita, Verbier Festival Academy alumnus and winner of many prestigious accolades—including a widely lauded run to the Silver Medal at the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition—makes his solo debut on the stage of the Verbier Festival! Over the course of five exceptional concerts, the young pianist tackles a formidable challenge: the complete Mozart Piano Sonatas.

Fujita finishes his extraordinary feat in this final volume: first up, the expressive Ninth Sonata in D Major with its superb Andante con espressione, followed by Sonata No. 17, brimming with dreamy tranquility. Finally, the young virtuoso's adventure concludes, fittingly, with the final piano sonata Mozart composed: No. 18 in D Major, written in 1789, a juxtaposition of contradictory emotions that nonetheless coheres into a harmonious whole, highlighted by a magnificent counterpoint.
