Program notes
On March 8, Marin Alsop calls the shots! One of the most prominent women in the conducting field, Alsop brings her artistry and expertise to mark the occasion of International Women's Day while also paying tribute to Polish musical genius. Under the American's direction, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra performs two recent compositions, beginning with the convoluted chords of Stanisław Skrowaczewski's Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra. The evening continues with Two Composers, Four Hands, a piece for double string orchestra by the extraordinary Roxanna Panufnik, before Prokofiev's graceful and exuberant Symphony No. 1, often called the Classical Symphony, concludes the festivities in high style.
