Program notes

Ravel's piano repertoire is the centerpiece of this sublime concert featuring piano legend Martha Argerich and conducting great Lahav Shani. Witness the soulful interpretation of Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, a personal favorite of Argerich, which she has honed to virtuosic perfection over the years. Shani then joins her on the bench for a delightful four-hands rendition of selections from Ravel's whimsical Ma mère l’Oye suite.

Over the course of this program dedicated to early twentieth century masters, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra showcases a work by Israeli great Paul Ben-Haim : his ambitious and monumental Symphony No. 1, composed and premiered during the Second World War. The concert opens with another modern masterpiece, Stravinsky's Firebird suite, in its 1919 version, a vivid and colorful adventure in sound inspired by the eponymous ballet.
