Program notes

Discover a stunning series of Baroque arias and orchestral works by Nicola Antonio Porpora (1686 - 1768), one of the most renowned and influential composers of his day, in this blockbuster concert from the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival! Maestra Martyna Pastuszka directs the {oh!} Historical Orchestra, joined by acclaimed Russian soprano Julia Lezhneva, who dazzles in Porpora's vocal works.

Though not as widely remembered today as some of his contemporaries and pupils (including Haydn), Porpora bore a considerable influence on Italian opera seria, and was appreciated by the singers of his era for his ability to tailor a work to suit its performers. The {oh!} Historical Orchestra, from the Silesia region of Poland, are an ideal ensemble to interpret Porpora's highly spirited works, including arias from his operas AngelicaSifaceSiroe re di Persia, and Ezio.
